It was peaceful walking through the night. While the dry air of the desert in the day was as comforting as it was tiring, the chilly breeze of the dry cold did little but soothe my spirits as I helped Natakia walk down a steep incline that was common in the Cragged Fields.

“I don’t like getting into arguments with you, Natakia,” I said as she found her footing. “I’m sorry about the carriage, and . . . you are right in that I wasn’t there for you, but now that I am . . . I don’t want to spend this time fighting.”

“I know you don’t, Dad.” Natakia seemed glum. “I know you just want the best for me, but you don’t . . . you don’t get it. I know Esmeralda is scary, but . . . she told me that you didn’t believe her about Mom.”

“Natakia, your mother was not poisoned.” There was no doubt about that. “Why do you believe that she was?”

“There was evidence. There was a jealous midwife. Esmeralda and Markus told me all about it,” she said, a fervor building up in her words. “I can’t read Esmeralda, not well, but Markus was telling the truth. He believed every word of what he told me, and the evidence . . .”

I sighed, rubbing my chin before bending down to look for a good fire starter. “Tell me about this evidence.”

“Lord Hubrick Velbrun of Venil.” Natakia seemed eager now, as if I were only now just listening to her. “He was the culprit. We found traces of poison on some of Mom’s old clothing, and I used my magic to track the poison used back to the original stock! A stock in Hubrick’s collection! He even admitted to it!”

For a moment I wasn’t sure what to say, but I knew that I had to say something. My daughter was eager to have me congratulate her, but I couldn’t do so without acknowledging the truth of all of this.

“Natakia, I . . .” I paused for a moment, gathering my thoughts as Natakia waited with bated breath. “I can see why your magic was necessary, your expertise, with Markus being far less proficient and Esmeralda only capable of using Mortum, but this . . .”

“Why aren’t you proud of me? I solved the mystery of Mom’s death! I got the person who took her away from us!” Natakia gritted her teeth, quickly getting worked up. “How could you still be thinking about whatever mistake I made when we did this right! We succeeded!”

“I already knew that Lord Hubrick Velbrun attempted to poison Lydia, Natakia,” I said, running my hand through my hair. “That’s why you’ve made a mistake.”

“You . . . You already knew?” Natakia blinked, looking at me, before she shook her head. “No, that doesn’t make sense. If you knew, then you would have done something about it!”

“We did do something about it. Lydia used the remains of her influence to oust him to Venil,” I said, remembering the day that my wife and I had discovered his dislike for Ruskans.
